…I’ve been using Duolingo for a full week.

I’m sure I’m still in that honeymoon period where the novelty is keeping me invested. So who knows if I’ll be in it next year.

But for now – I love it. I took Spanish for three years in middle / high school and remembered just enough to annoy me that I’m not more fluent. And every time I’ve tried to pick up the language again with tapes or audiobooks or whatever, the lessons start too simply. I can only practice “Hola” once before I’m bored out of my skull.

So Duolingo’s approach is a huge blessing. I love that I’ve been able to dive straight into more intermediate lessons that balance both review and new info.

And now that I’ve given up drinking again, it’s a good way to kill time and keep me distracted. Let’s hope it sticks.

…our homemade soap is great.

Back in 2020 we stocked up on castile soap because we couldn’t find regular liquid soap in stock anywhere. We’ve been making our own foaming hand soap since and it turns out I like it better, anyway.

So now we got ourselves a little hobby on top of a useful household commodity. A hobby that only really comes up every couple of weeks or so. But still, we’ve got a variety of scented oils to try out, so why not.

…my parents have a pool I can mooch off.

That’s the best of both worlds. I get free access to a pool whenever I want, and I don’t have to pay for a thing.

Pools are too goddamn expensive, man. They’ve gotta be up at the top of the list of things that are only cool when they aren’t yours.

It’s inside a greenhouse, too, so we can swim off season. Granted, I had to build that greenhouse when I was a kid, but whatever. It’s there now, might as well enjoy it.
